Overview of The Hunger Project

The Hunger Project (THP) is a strategic organization and global movement committed to the sustainable end of world hunger. We work in more than 10,000 villages across 13 countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America and empower millions of women and men to end their own hunger. The Hunger Project has pioneered low-cost, bottom-up, gender-focused strategies in each region where hunger persists. These strategies mobilize clusters of rural villages to create and run their own programs that achieve lasting progress in health, education, nutrition and family income.

In all our work, The Hunger Project’s highest priority is the empowerment of women. Women traditionally bear primary responsibility for family health, education, nutrition and - increasingly - family income. Yet, women have been systematically denied information, resources and voice in decisions that affect their lives. Although there is no country where there is gender equality, in the countries that have the persistence of hunger - the subjugation, marginalization and disempowerment of women is particularly severe.

There are three distinct ways women are fundamental to ending hunger and abject poverty.
  1. There is an inextricable link between women’s well-being and the overall health of a society.

  2. Women are the world’s producers yet they are largely unrecognized and unsupported in their role as producers.

  3. Women’s leadership is a necessary component of ending hunger.

Women are at the center of the development process, and until and unless we make the empowerment of women a central strategy in ending hunger, hunger will persist. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said: “Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance.”

When women do have voice in decisions that affect their lives, they’re healthier, they have safer sex and fewer children, more of their children stay alive and are better nourished, and more children are in school, including girls.

For more information about The Hunger Project visit www.thp.org.
