Sherif Ayoub, 2006 MIA Graduate with a concentration in Economic and Political Development

Back to Students, Faculty and Alumni Interviews

Sherif Ayoub graduated from SIPA in May 2006 with a Master of International Affairs and a dual concentration of Economic and Political Development as well as International Business and Finance.  He is currently an Investment Officer with ICD (an affiliate of the Islamic Development Bank Group) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, focusing on private sector development in Africa.

Why did you choose to attend SIPA?

“First of all, after some research I realized that SIPA is truly the best international affairs/public policy school; not only in the US, but worldwide.  Second, I wanted to be near the center of world politics (New York) and development (United Nations).  Third, the prospect of attending classes and using the entire resources of Columbia University was a huge plus.”

How would you describe your experience at SIPA?

“It was a great experience.  Challenging and fulfilling by taking classes from the top professors in their fields as well as being around very intelligent people with such a diverse set of experiences and backgrounds.  Again, being in New York was also nice.”

What’s your estimation of SIPA’s reputation in academic and professional settings?

“In public policy circles, the reputation of SIPA is quite well known as being of a superior nature.  But outside those circles, SIPA is relatively not known.  The same holds true for SAIS, Kennedy School, Fletcher, etc.  These schools are known more as Columbia, Harvard, etc.”

What’s your most vivid impression or recollection of SIPA?

“Being right there in front of all these world leaders and being able to ask questions.”

If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose SIPA as your graduate program?

“Of course.  In a heart beat.”

Can you give your impressions about extracurricular SIPA events such as speakers visiting the school?

“This is unparalleled in any other school.  The number of people that visit New York and who visit SIPA during their New York visit is a huge plus for the school.“

Do you still interact with your former classmates on a consistent basis?

We are in touch often and meet up all over the world.
