Philippe Dauba-Pantanacce, 2007 MIA Graduate with a concentration in International Finance and Business

Back to Students, Faculty and Alumni Interviews

Philippe Dauba-Pantanacce graduated with an MIA degree focusing on International Finance and Business in 2007 and is now a Senior Economist with Standard Chartered bank in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  His focus is on Global Markets with a regional focus on the Middle East and North Africa.

What were you doing prior to attending SIPA?

“I was responsible for HSBC Asset Management Global Emerging Market funds for Continental Europe clients, based out of Paris.”

What are you doing now?

“As a Senior Economist I am supposed to look over the economies and stakes of the Middle East and North Africa; analysis, comments, research papers in a setting that is split between my own work reporting and communicating with the press.”

Describe your background prior to attending SIPA?

“I started off my professional experience in the public sector: working for the French diplomacy in Washington DC, along with some experience in the U.S. Congress. I then switched to the private sector going to the financial sector with HSBC where I worked for almost 5 years both in their Paris and New York offices.”

“My education background prior to SIPA was Econometrics, Finance and International Relations.”

How would you describe your experience at SIPA?

“It was truly great. The student body is truly unique, as international as it can get. The great thing for me being that with my previous educational background I could test out of a few classes and concentrate exclusively on what I had come to SIPA for: emerging market economics and finance.  The diversity in experiences coming from the student body was to me half of the experience, and being in New York only added more wealth to the program.”

What’s your estimation of SIPA’s reputation in academic and professional settings?

“I actually chose SIPA because one of the most senior executives at HSBC Asset Management, the Global Head of Emerging Markets, had gone to SIPA, and I discovered that he was not the only one in our line of business. They all had only praise for SIPA.”

“Coming from the business side of international affairs before SIPA I could tell before hand that SIPA’s curriculum was exactly what I needed to succeed. And after going through the program I heartedly confirm it.”

“SIPA’s program is rich, diverse and addresses most of the challenges you will face in an international environment with constantly moving parameters. In an international career you have to be able to keep adapting to a changing environment, and the complexities of today’s world requires from you the ability to analyze various layers of information – being contextual, political or financial – in order to come up with the right decision making process. And SIPA definitely addresses this better than any other program I know.”
