Bill Rigler, 2004 MIA Graduate with a concentration in International Security Policy

Back to Students, Faculty and Alumni Interviews

Bill Rigler is a founding member of the SIPA Alumni Council. He calls his SIPA education "the single best investment that I have ever made

Describe your background prior to attending SIPA?

“I had worked at the United Nations Association (UNA-USA), followed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).”

How would you describe your experience at SIPA?

“SIPA was, without question, the single best investment that I have ever made.  My experience at SIPA was different from many of my classmates given that I was a part-time student and juggled a full-time job at the UN with evening and early morning courses.

SIPA’s stature as a professional school, which was bolstered by the breadth and depth of eminent, real world professionals, meant that I received an education into real world problems and solutions.  At the same time, the diversity of the student body, both in terms of geography and experience, meant that I often learned as much from my fellow students as I did from the professors.”

What’s the most valuable thing you took away from your time at SIPA?

“An incredible network of contacts.”

What is your relationship with SIPA now?

“I serve as a founding member of the Alumni Council, a selective body which advises the Dean on outreach to our diverse alumni body.  I also served as a founding co-chair of the ISP Alumni Network from 2004 – 07.”

Do you keep in touch with your fellow SIPA alumni?

“Yes, mainly via email and networking events.”

What is your most vivid impression or recollection of SIPA?

“Congratulating Joseph Stiglitz for receiving the Nobel Prize in economics, followed by the school’s response to the 9/11 attacks, which included an immediate emphasis on international security programs, terrorism, intelligence, and conflict resolution.”
