February 2008
Dear SIPA Alumnus/a:
We invite you to join us for Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs’ (SIPA) Eighth Annual Global Leadership Awards Dinner, to be held on Monday, April 14th at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. The cocktail reception will begin at 6:30 PM with the dinner and awards ceremony to follow.
The hallmark of the Global Leadership Awards Dinner is SIPA’s unique ability to bring together exceptional individuals, both as honorees and guests, who have exhibited a dedication to public service in their lives and in their careers. This year, we are pleased to recognize the following outstanding individuals who embody this commitment to service:
- Arnold A. Saltzman – Distinguished industrialist and diplomat, Mr. Saltzman has served in a wide range of policy-level diplomatic and economic assignments under five presidents in Eastern Europe, Latin America and within the United States. A graduate of Columbia College in 1936, he has devoted himself to serving as chairman of numerous University programs at Columbia. He is co-founder of the Double Discovery Program, which assists under-achieving minority high school students to prepare for college entrance, and helped to create the first SIPA Advisory Board. Mr. Saltzman has also endowed the Institute of War and Peace Studies at SIPA.
- Lan Yang (MIA ’96) – A leading force in China’s media business, Ms. Yang is the chairperson of Sun Media Investments Holdings, Ltd., which covers television and multi-media production, satellite TV networks, business newspapers, magazines and media investment. She is also one of China’s leading television journalists. In 2005, she founded Sun Culture Foundation with a mission to promote the relief of poverty, advancement of education, and understandings across civilizations. She actively serves as goodwill ambassador on several national charity foundations, promoting environmental protection, education, and blood donation. Ms. Yang is also a member of Columbia University’s International Advisory Council and SIPA’s Advisory Board.
Since 1946, SIPA has been educating professionals who make a difference in the world. Today, as one of the leading public policy schools in the world, SIPA provides its students with the rigorous academic training and necessary practical skills to pursue distinguished careers in government, business, media and international organizations. Its faculty, students, and alumni are committed to enhancing the public good: providing social services, supporting human rights, building markets, protecting the environment and resolving conflicts.
The Annual Global Leadership Awards Dinner provides critical fellowship support to SIPA’s students. We hope you will take this opportunity to acknowledge this important program by supporting SIPA through a Leadership ($50,000), Benefactor ($25,000) or Patron Level ($10,000) gift for this special event. Individual tickets are also available. If you are not able to attend, we hope you will consider sponsoring a student or faculty member at the cost of $500 per seat. For additional information, please contact Camy Calve Events at (212) 218-4080 or see the online response form here.
