Students Use Technology to Help Earthquake Victims in Chile
Ushahidi
A group of SIPA students is taking the lead in a project to guide relief efforts in Chile. They are coordinating a crisis mapping Web site for Ushahidi, which gathers information submitted via email, text message and social media.

 "The idea behind the site is to provide as much information as possible to organizations in the field and to people in Chile," said Anahi Ayala Iacucci (MIA '10) "We put available information onto a map that anyone can access."

published Why Intelligence Fails: Lessons from the Iranian Revolution and the Iraq War. Professor Jervis examines the politics and psychology of two of the more spectacular intelligence failures in recent memory: the mistaken belief that the regime of the Shah in Iran was secure and stable in 1978, and the claim that Iraq had active WMD programs in 2002.


Wolfram Schlenker published a paper in Environmental Research Letters, entitled "Robust Negative Impacts of Climate Change on African Agriculture." Professor Schlenker and co-author David B. Lobell analyze the effects of climate change on agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa by combining historical crop production and weather data.

Joseph Stiglitz
published Freefall, an examination of the global economic crisis, the response, and the implications for the world's future prosperity. Professor Stiglitz traces the origins of the Great Recession and argues for a restoration of the balance between government and markets.

Aldo Civico
, director of the Center for International Conflict Resolution, has been named to Colombia's Commission for Historical Memory. The Commission comprises scholars who are working together to construct an inclusive memory of the armed conflict in Colombia. The goal is to build a foundation for the understanding and transformation of the conflict, while respecting diversity and giving voice to the various armed actors and victims. More

David DinkinsEconomic Recovery in the Cities: SIPA hosted the 13th Annual David N. Dinkins Leadership and Public Policy Forum, with keynote speaker Congressman Charles B. Rangel. The forum examined the impact of President Obama's policies on the economic challenges in the New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania region. Panelists included Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, Trenton Mayor Douglas Palmer, and former Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi. More

Public Policy Case Competition: Tackling a Real World Challenge:
How would you build a security agency to protect America's energy resources? Or push an important bill through a fractious Albanian parliament? Students faced these questions in SIPA's annual Public Policy Case Competition. The contest brings together students and practitioners to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world. Bringing Energy to Rural Ghana: A student team from SIPA's International Energy Management and Policy Program received this year's Leous/Parry Award for Progressive Sustainability, for its Capstone Workshop on increasing access to energy in rural Ghana. The award was created by alumni J.P. Leous and Neal Parry (MPA '06) to support interdisciplinary approaches to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development. More

published House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival, the first book in English about the legendary fashion designer. For the past twelve years, Ball has served as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal in Milan, London and Zurich.
