A Witness to Four Wars, Graduate Focuses on Building Peace
Monique Tuyisenge-Onyegbula
It has been a long journey for Monique Tuyisenge-Onyegbula, who graduated from SIPA in 2010.

Twenty-seven years old, she has already witnessed four wars - Rwanda, Cote d'Ivoire, Iraq and Afghanistan. Her goal: to help bring peace to communities affected by violence.

Austin LongAustin Long published "Small is Beautiful: The Counterterrorism Option in Afghanistan" in Orbis®, the Foreign Policy Research Institute's quarterly journal of world affairs. Professor Long examines the option of shifting U.S. strategy from protecting the Afghan population and building the central state, to focusing on preventing Afghanistan from again becoming a haven for al Qaeda.
 
Rodolfo de la Garza published Beyond the Barrio: Latinos in the 2004 Elections, with co-editors Louis DeSipio and David L. Leal. Professor de la Garza analyzes the mobilization of Latino voters at the state and national levels during the 2004 campaign and the efforts of Latino communities to influence electoral outcomes.
School
Scott BarrettScott Barrett, Lenfest-Earth Institute Professor of Natural Resource Economics, will serve as SIPA's Vice-Dean of Academic Affairs during the 2010 - 2011 academic year. Professor Barrett has agreed to serve while current Vice-Dean Robert Lieberman is on sabbatical. Upon his return in fall 2011, Professor Lieberman has agreed to serve another three-year term as Vice-Dean. More
 
International Financial Issues in Emerging Markets:
The financial crisis illustrates the relevance of international financial links among countries and their impact on the world economy.This interconnectedness poses unique challenges for policymakers and researchers. To address these challenges, SIPA and the Inter-American Development Bank co-hosted leading policymakers and practitioners from around the world for an executive training program. More
Alumni
Roger BaumannRoger Baumann (IF '84, MIA '85), SIPA's Alumni Council chair, was awarded the Columbia Alumni Medal at the 2010 University Commencement. The Alumni Medal is the highest honor bestowed by the Columbia Alumni Association for distinguished service to the University. More
 
Dr. Jay Levy (IF '62, MD '65), co-discoverer of HIV, the AIDS virus, delivered the keynote address at SIPA's Second Annual Alumni Day on May 1. Read Dr. Levy's remarks here.
