Egypt
Uprising: SIPA Expertise in
the Spotlight
The breathtaking changes in Egypt come with a huge
array of not only political and governmental, but also
social and economic implications—and SIPA faculty are on
top of them all. In addition to numerous media appearances,
Professors Jean-Pierre Filiu and Rashid Khalidi
participated in a panel discussion on February 10 hosted
by Columbia University’s Committee for Global
Thought.
Professor Gary Sick also analyzes the uprising in
an article for World Policy Review entitled
" Freeze-Drive
Politics."

Faculty Proposal to Eradicate
Polio
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has announced
that the eradication of polio is the top priority for
his foundation, and that he will increase funding to
bolster the effort. Scott Barrett, SIPA professor and
interim vice-dean, published an article this month in
which he examines the decision to stop vaccinating
against polio as a tool to wipe it out. Professor
Barrett’s article “Stop! The Polio Vaccination Cessation
Game” was published by the The
World Bank Economic Review.
