China and India: Confrontation or Cooperation?
Last week, China and India reported higher-than-expected inflation readings, drawing yet more attention to their growing importance to the global economy. The emergence of China and India and their relationship will define international affairs in the coming decades. In the new issue of SIPA’s Journal of International Affairs, top scholars from around the world examine relations between the two powers. The Journal will host a discussion of the relationship on April 25.

What’s Next for Haiti?
About 50 SIPA students attended a recent United Nations Security Council debate on Haiti, at which former President Bill Clinton delivered a report. The students also heard from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Haitian President René Préval, and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, the current chair of the Security Council. The April 6 session, the latest up-close look at the UN for SIPA students, was organized by UN Studies Program director Elisabeth Lindenmayer.

Iran: After the Revolution
Shirin Ebadi, Nobel Peace Laureate, lawyer, judge, and founder of the Center for the Defense of Human Rights in Iran, will deliver SIPA’s Gabriel Silver Memorial Lecture on April 20. Ebadi will discuss the current situation in Iran and her newest book, The Golden Cage: Three Brothers, Three Choices, One Destiny.

Fast Track to the Federal Government
Seventeen SIPA students are traveling to Washington this week as finalists in the federal government's Presidential Management Fellows program. Fellows spend two years working in a federal department or agency and participate in a mentorship program and training sessions.

Popular Professor Recognized for Faculty Achievement
Mahmood Mamdani, the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at SIPA, was honored with a Distinguished Columbia Faculty Award. The awards, established by Columbia University Trustee Gerry Lenfest, recognize faculty across a range of activities – including scholarship, University citizenship, and professional involvement – with an emphasis on instruction and mentoring.

SIPA Welcomes Alumni Home
About 150 SIPA alumni came back to Columbia University on April 16 for the School’s third annual Alumni Day, featuring discussions on President Obama’s performance, U.S.-China trade, the “end game” in Afghanistan, and flashpoints in the Middle East. The day included a message from former SIPA Dean Lisa Anderson, now president of the American University in Cairo, and a keynote address by alumna Susie Gharib, anchor of “Nightly Business Report” on PBS.
