Dirk Salomons authored a chapter in United Nations Reform and the New Collective Security, entitled "On the Far Side of Conflict: The UN Peacebuilding Commission as Optical Illusion." Professor Salomons examines the UN's 2005 establishment of the Peacebuilding Commission. He argues that its creation, intended as reform, may actually increase bureaucracy and hinder post-conflict reconstruction and development.

Anya SchiffrinAnya Schiffrin published "Not Really Enough: Foreign Donors and Journalism Training in Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda" in Journalism Practice. Institute for the Study of Human Rights:
The former Center for the Study of Human Rights is now an institute, a change approved by the Trustees of Columbia University. The Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) will "play a better role in serving its different constituencies, and in particular to deepen the offering of human rights courses, initiate and coordinate research and bridge the academic work with the advocacy community," said Professor Elazar Barkan, ISHR Director.

Kenneth PrewittThe U.S. Census: The Future of Racial and Ethnic Categories: Racial identification on the U.S. census goes back to the nation's roots. Despite many changes over time, the census uses the same basic racial classification scheme introduced in the 18th century. The civil rights revolution of the 1960s raised the stakes for racial classification, as the data are increasingly used to draw congressional districts and allocate government resources. Professor Kenneth Prewitt, director of the 2000 census, led off a panel discussion on the census and racial and ethnic categories. Watch the video.

The Polish People's Republic: So Close and So Far Away: This spring, SIPA hosted a traveling exhibit on Poland's turbulent post-World War II history. The exhibit spans 45 years, from the Warsaw Rising through the workers protests, the birth of the dissident movement and the election of a Polish Pope, the beginnings of Solidarity and the collapse of communism. View a photo album of the exhibit here, and listen to an interview with Professor John Micgiel from Polskie Radio.
