| David Dinkins Public Policy Forum Addresses Immigration The 10th Annual David N. Dinkins Leadership and Public Policy Forum gathered a number of experts in the fields of law, public policy, philanthropy and social work to discuss immigration. "Changing America: National and Urban Responses to Immigration" is the latest in a series of forums that have in past years tackled such issues as urban renewal, tourism, affirmative action and welfare to work. This year's forum also served to announce the creation of the David N. Dinkins Professorship in the Practice of Urban and Public Affairs. |

| Senator Clinton Addresses Conference on Plight of the Roma On Nov. 8, Columbia held an international conference on contemporary issues facing the Roma people, the largest minority group in Europe. New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered the keynote address at the daylong program. Three panel sessions convened European and U.S. experts to discuss the history of the Roma in the 20th century and the current situation for millions of Roma living throughout Eastern and Central Europe. Current and future EU policies to address racial and social discrimination and human rights concerns also were discussed. The conference was hosted by President Lee C. Bollinger and the School of International and Public Affairs' Institute for the Study of Europe. |

| World Responds Inadequately to Refugee Children The predicament of children trapped in the middle of armed conflict and the global community's response to the crisis in Darfur were among the issues discussed at "The Future of Children in a Global Society" annual symposium on "Children of Immigrants and Refugees." Co-sponsored by Columbia's Institute for Child and Family Policy and the University's Center for Global Health and Economic Development, the Oct. 18 event featured Iain Levine, program director of Human Rights Watch, and Mary Robinson, executive director of the Ethical Globalization Initiative at Columbia University. |
