The Morningside Post Launches New Web Site
The Morningside Post, the community blog for Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, announced the launch of its new Web site. The student-managed site features unique perspectives from nearly 100 SIPA students, faculty and alumni and is read around the world.
Enhanced features of the Web site include video recordings of notable speakers at SIPA; subscription services to posts according to author, region and topic, RSS feeds, links to SIPA News, and space for student groups to post their own stories and events. TMP will also be cross linking with dozens of other blogs that feature perspectives on international affairs, such as The Huffington Post.
“The Morningside Post is now the premier Web 2.0 site on international affairs among graduate schools of public policy and international affairs,” said Ben Colmery (MIA ’09), co-managing editor of TMP. “The site has blossomed into a real force, not only here in our Morningside Heights neighborhood, but also among leaders in the broader international affairs community.”
Established in 2004, The Morningside Post was a project of several students with a vision for a blog to showcase SIPA’s expertise, including: Thomas Glaisyer, Michael Roston, Dan McSweeney, and Jeca Taudte.
Thomas Glaisyer (MIA ‘06), founding editor of The Morningside Post, commented on the development of the site. "It is clear that The Morningside Post has continued to push both for quality in international affairs content whilst substantially developing their social media platform. It's nice to see our modest blog grow into a site that promotes the ideas of SIPA's faculty, alumni and students more ambitiously.” To coincide with its commitment to innovation and new media technology, The Morningside Post is also featured online at the social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.
Many Columbia University professors including David Epstein, Andrew Gelman, Brigitte Nacos, Sharyn O'Halloran, Jagdish Bhagwati, Anya Schiffrin, Thomas Lansner and Tanya Domi have provided their expert opinions on issues ranging from globalization and trade in the developing world to human rights and political development.
The Morningside Post has also teamed with partners from the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN), including Sciences Po Paris, the London School of Economics and Political Science and the National University of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, to expand the global reach of student perspectives. Student bloggers through GPPN hail from nations such as the United Kingdom, France, Singapore, Germany, Mexico, Japan, Russia, India, Switzerland, Canada and Brazil.
“We aim to foster those debates that don’t always take place in class and provide a view into the amazing work of students, faculty and alumni that is happening both right here at SIPA and worldwide,” added Courtney Doggart (MIA ’09), TMP co-managing editor. “The new TMP helps us do just that, and we will continue to add the latest technology to reach our global audience.”
Recently, The Morningside Post facilitated a live, worldwide blog session during the U.S. Presidential Election. On Election Day 2008, student bloggers from around the globe offered opinions and analysis for the election’s implications in their respective countries. Participating schools included The Hertie School of Governance (HSoG) in Berlin, University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP), Fundação Getulio Vargas, Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo (FGV-EAESP ), Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) in Mexico City and The Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO-University).
The Morningside Post welcomes new bloggers, including current students and alumni with a unique perspective on global events and issues, and faculty members and international affairs practitioners affiliated with SIPA.
