Jean-Marie Guéhenno is Named New Director of the Center for International Conflict Resolution
SIPA has announced the appointment of Jean-Marie Guéhenno, the Arnold A. Saltzman Professor of Professional Practice in International and Public Affairs, to lead its Center for International Conflict Resolution. A distinguished scholar and former senior official in the UN and French government, including as the longest-serving head of UN peace-keeping, Guéhenno has been at the forefront of efforts to address the conflicts of Africa and strategic challenges from Afghanistan to Kosovo and Georgia.
“Jean-Marie possesses the scholarly knowledge, demonstrated leadership and practical expertise that we at SIPA seek to impart to our students,” said Dean John H. Coatsworth. “In continuing his vital work from our Center, he will fulfill our aim to create a more peaceful, equitable world while also training others to do so.”
Guéhenno is also Associate Director of the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute for War and Peace Studies at SIPA and a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. He was recently appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to chair the newly created Senior Advisory Group for the Review of International Civilian Capacities. In addition to directing SIPA’s new specialization in international conflict resolution, Guéhenno is involved in several projects concerning human rights, good governance and security, and advises governments, international and non-governmental organizations.
“The Center has become a renowned nexus for the study and practice of conflict resolution, and it is a great privilege to be invited to direct it,” said Guéhenno. “As we prepare our students to become peace-makers and peace-keepers, I know that their energy and enthusiasm will infuse my own work.”
As Under-Secretary-General for UN peace-keeping from 2000 to 2008, Guéhenno led the department during its largest expansion in UN history. In this role, Guéhenno oversaw a budget of $7 billion and supported the deployment of about 110,000 personnel through 18 different operations.
Guéhenno is the author of several books and has taught extensively, including as a professor at the Institut d’Etudes Politques of Paris and the Ecole nationale d’Administration. Guéhenno has been awarded the Officier de la legion d’honneur and the Commander’s Cross of the German Order of Merit.
