Aldo Civico Joins Colombia’s Commission for Historical Memory

Back to News & Events

Professor Aldo Civico, director of the Center for International Conflict Resolution, has been named to Colombia’s Commission for Historical Memory. The Commission comprises scholars who are working together to construct an inclusive memory of the armed conflict in Colombia. The goal is to build a foundation for the understanding and transformation of the conflict, while respecting diversity and giving voice to the various armed actors and victims.

Professor Civico will participate in a working group led by Colombian anthropologist Maria Victoria Uribe. The group will examine the voluntary statements to prosecutors by former members of paramilitary organizations under the Justice and Peace Law, which has regulated the demobilization and reintegration of former combatants. Professor Civico’s research will focus on the impact of the extradition of major paramilitary leaders on the rights of victims.

The Commission for Historical Memory is a major component of the National Commission for the Reparation and Reconciliation, constituted by the Colombian government to guarantee the rights of victims of paramilitary violence.

Professor Civico, an expert on the Colombian conflict, conducts fieldwork on the counterinsurgency strategy of the Colombia government. Learn more about his research here.
