Lost Voices of Darfur: An Unveiling

Back to News & Events

Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs and Waging Peace presented Lost Voices of Darfur: An Unveiling in the International Affairs Building. The exhibit, largely comprising drawings by children, presented the story of Darfur as experienced by its people; from their memories of peace, through the attacks on their villages, to their subsequent flight to save their lives.

News reporting of conflicts tends to reduce events to statistics. The children’s drawings presented in Lost Voices of Darfur add a human dimension to those statistics. Women and children received particular attention, as their voices and experiences are often unheard and forgotten.

The story is divided into three parts: life in Darfur before the conflict, accounts of the attacks, and international responses to the conflict. Lost Voices of Darfur is a unique collection of first-hand material including testimonies, photographs, drawings and petitions.
