Over the years, SIPA has established a number of institutes, centers, and programs that reflect both the research interests of the faculty and the issues faced by today's policymakers. The regional institutes, which are housed at SIPA and cover nearly every part of the world, bring together the University's extensive resources in each geographic area and attract distinguished visiting scholars and speakers to our campus. In addition, to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century—the demands placed on the world's environment, economy, and political institutions—the school has sponsored a number of important research initiatives.

Regional Institutes

With five National Resource Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Columbia has the most comprehensive area studies program in the United States. There are seven regional institutes at Columbia University; the first, the Russian Institute (now part of the Harriman Institute), was established in 1946, and the most recent, the South Asian Institute, in 1967. The institutes also provide a forum for students, faculty, and others with a special interest in a given area.

Research Institutes

SIPA's commitment to advancing the development of policy extends beyond the classroom alone. SIPA's research institutes bring together faculty and visiting scholars working on the cutting edge of their disciplines; its centers promote new collaborations between the academic community and practitioners in both the public and private sectors. Projects and programs ranging from UN studies to economic policy management complement the curriculum and broaden its focus. This exchange of ideas, with its emphasis on finding viable solutions to real-world problems, is at the heart of our mission.
