About

The past decade has seen the transformation of emerging markets from peripheral players to significant actors in the international arena. Their new economic power has been recognized by the G20. Their political assertiveness is pointing toward a more multi-polar world. Their support is becoming critical for the success of trade as well as environmental negotiations. The strength of their economies helped pull the world out of the recent recession. And, the dynamism of their economies is generating strong sales and profit growth for companies based in emerging markets as well as in developed markets.

Of all the emerging markets, Brazil, Russia, India and China, collectively representing more than 40 percent of the world’s population, enjoy special status due to their economic and political clout. The rise of the BRICs has the potential to be a transforming event for the world.

While the BRIC concept has received substantial corporate attention, with many companies designing new business strategies around these four countries, much more exploration is needed to understand the consequences of the BRICs’ growing influence. What are the strategic, political, environmental, economic, and financial consequences of their rise? What are the policy implications? The conference will explore all these angles and more.

SIPA’s multidisciplinary and global approach, its unique mix of public and international affairs curriculum, its international network of affiliated universities and Global Centers, and its devoted focus on emerging markets together make it uniquely qualified to play this convening role.
