Rebecca E. Engel is an
Associate Research Scholar at Columbia University’s School of International and
Public Affairs and a founding member of Columbia University’s Center for
International Conflict Resolution. Ms. Engel oversees all CICR programs in
Timor-Leste, and is presently a Senior Advisor to the multi-year USAID-financed
NGO Sector Strengthening Project (NGOSSP) in Timor-Leste.
Ms. Engel developed and implemented the Civil Society Capacity Building Project
to Reduce Tensions during the Transition, and has been leading a burgeoning team
in Timor-Leste since early 2002. Previously, she co-edited the Report on Social
and Economic Conditions in East Timor, a major paper examining sectoral needs
and identifying priorities for post-conflict transition. In 2003, she published
an article in the Journal of International Affairs entitled Reaching for
Stability: Strengthening Civil Society-Donor Partnerships in East Timor. More
recently the Fride Foundation for International Relations published her article
on The Crisis in Timor-Leste: Restoring National Unity through State
Institutions, Culture, and Civil Society.
A member of the CICR staff since its foundation in 1997, she has provided
support to numerous projects and programs and has particular interest in issues
of conflict prevention and post-conflict development in fragile states. Ms.
Engel led the Seminar on Conflict Prevention and Development: Critical
Connections at SIPA in Spring 2005 and 2006.
Ms. Engel received her Master of International Affairs degree with a
concentration in International Conflict Resolution from the School of
International and Public Affairs. She received her undergraduate degree from
Barnard College, Columbia University. |
