Harry Barnes served for a number of years in the U.S. Foreign Service including
posts as ambassador to Romania (1974-77), India (1981-85) and Chile (1985-88).
From 1977 to 1981 he was Director General of the Foreign Service and Director
of Personnel.
In the period between 1989 and 1993 he was successively a visiting professor
at Mount Holyoke College, Hamilton College and Simmons College. From 1993-2000
he directed the programs in conflict resolution and human rights at the
Carter Center.
Currently he is chairman of the board of the Romanian American Enterprise
Fund, and a board member at the Project on Ethnic Relations, the Center
for International Environmental Law and the Institute for Sustainable
Communities. He is also a senior advisor to the Asia Society.
