“Religion and Representation – Comparative Secularisms.” With Aijaz Ahmad, Jean Franco, Harry Harootunian, Ziba Mir-Hosseini, Philip Kitcher, Goenawan Mohamad, Valentin Mudimbe, Vincent Pecora, James Schmidt, Shail Mayaram, Mark Siderits, Romila Thapar, Paolo Valesio, Michael Warner, Xudong Zhang (March 28-29, 2007)

The conference analyzes a discussion that generates the terms of a new discourse on the indigenous trajectories of secularism within the world’s religious traditions. The speakers emphasize that the imposition of secularism as a polar opposite to religion, – or the imposition of a variety of tolerance as part of globalized democratization – is not the way to global justice. The conference is co-sponsored by CDTR, the Center for Comparative Literature and Society, and the Office of the Provost.
