Tourism in Africa: A Viable Revenue Source
Governments in Africa are showing increasing interest in tourism as a source of growth and diversification. Recent trends indicate that tourism in Africa can effectively contribute to economic development. This is due to:
- Barriers to entry in the international market are lower than for most external trade sectors
- Tourism expenditures can provide a significant stimulus to other production and service sectors
- If managed appropriately, tourism has the potential to assist in poverty eradication efforts, preserve cultural heritage, and protect natural resources
- International tourism is a high growth industry
While tourism is mainly a private sector activity, it also serves as cross sector activity with many impacts. Private sector led growth may only occur if Africa’s governments, private investors, tour operators, civil society, NGOs, and local communities work to together to form a progressive alliance. This panel will explore the evolution of the African tourism market, along with the opportunities and challenges that are faced.
