Instructions for Non-SIPA Students

Information regarding Cross-Registration to SIPA courses can be found on the web at http://sipa.columbia.edu/academics/sipa_registration/index.html.

Students from other Columbia Divisions/Schools are not able to register for SIPA classes via phone or web, with the exception of GSAS students for SIPA Open Enrollment Courses.  All students must come to the SIPA Registration Site (Stetton Lounge, 6th floor IAB building) for permission to register for SIPA courses starting Thursday, January 22nd at 10 AMStudents may add/drop courses until Friday, January 30th. 

There are three types of SIPA courses, Open, Department Approval Courses, and Instructor Permission Courses.  Please view the complete list of SIPA courses by category on the SIPA Registration website at http://sipa.columbia.edu/academics/sipa_registration/index.html.

Cross-Registrants can register for a maximum of 9 credits of SIPA courses per semester. 

Open Enrollment Courses are open to all Columbia students unless the class is full.

Starting on Thursday, January 22nd, students interested in registering for a SIPA Open Enrollment Courses may receive permission to enroll by completing a Registration & Add/Drop form, and bringing it to the SIPA Registration site on the 6th floor of the IAB. If the class is not full, approval will be granted and SIPA will register you for the class.

Note: GSAS students will have access to SIPA Open Enrollment Classes via telephone or web registration starting Tuesday,  January 13th

Departmental Approval Classes are available to SIPA students primarily, cross-registrants if space is available.

Students from other divisions of Columbia are not eligible to register for SIPA Core Courses.  These courses are U6800 Conceptual Foundations, U4320 Statistics, U4595/U4596 International Economics, U4600/4601 International Economic Analysis, U6110 Politics of Policymaking, U8213/8216 Microeconomics, U6310/6311 Quantitative Techniques and U4040/4041 Professional Development.

Starting Thursday, January 22nd at 10 AM, students may come in person to the SIPA Registration Site to inquire about the availability of Department Approval Classes.

Instructor Permission Courses require a one page on-line request, and priority is given to SIPA students. However, any Columbia student may submit a one page on-line request for admission to the course. The course instructor and the department will consider all requests.

For SIPA Instructor Permission courses, all students are required to submit a one-page request form. Students must submit this form via the SIPA registration website at (http://sipa.columbia.edu/academics/sipa_registration/index.html).

The deadline for requests is 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 15th.

Faculty will review all requests and select students based on the information contained in the requests.  Lists of students accepted, including ranked waiting lists are posted on the 6th floor of the IA building and on the SIPA registration website beginning at 1 pm on the first day of class.  Students accepted into an Instructor Permission Course will be able to register for the course starting the first day of class.

Students accepted into SIPA Instructor Permission Courses are guaranteed a seat in the class if they register in person by 5:00 PM Friday, January 23rd.  By this date, students must bring a Registration Add/Drop form to the SIPA registration site to be registered for the class.  If they fail to do so, they are no longer guaranteed a seat in the class. After the first week of classes, wait-listed students are contacted via e-mail and advised to register.

Beginning the second week of class, students may register for SIPA Instructor Permission Courses that have not closed by obtaining permission directly from the course instructor via her/his signature on a Registration & Add/Drop form, and by bringing the signed form to the SIPA Registration Site.  Once a class is full, the instructor’s approval cannot override the maximum enrollment for the class.
