Cross-Registration for Non-SIPA Courses
SIPA has made arrangements with various schools within the University to simplify the cross-registration process. Students may cross-register on-line for courses in GSAS (for courses at the 4000 and 6000-level), Urban Planning, and for all Language courses. Students must register in-person at the SIPA Registration Help Site for Teachers College, Public Health, and Social Work courses. Journalism School courses will be processed by the Journalism School.
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
GSAS courses are courses with the G- or W- prefix. The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences includes Political Science, Economics, History, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Anthropology, and Sociology Departments. 4000 and 6000- level GSAS courses listed in the MIA/MPA Course Registration Guide are open to SIPA students, although some may require approval.
Please note that all G or W prefix 8000 or 9000-level courses require the instructor's approval on the Registration & Add/Drop form. It is likely that you will need to wait until the first week of classes in order to get the instructor's approval for these courses.
Journalism School
Departmental approval is required for Journalism courses. From January 9 - January 30, students must submit the on-line application form (http://fs8.formsite.com/cjdos/Cross_Registration/). Approval is required from the Assistant Dean of Students for Journalism School courses. Requests should be made in person directly to Dean Melanie Huff (mgh2) who is located in 703 Journalism, 212-854-3861. Please note that Journalism School courses start one week later than SIPA courses.
Teachers College
Instructor Approval is required for all Teachers College (TC) courses. Only courses that fulfill MIA or MPA degree requirements will be approved for cross-registration. Students should get the instructor signature on a Registration Add/Drop form and submit it to the SIPA Registration Help Site to be cross-registered for any Teachers College course. If a TC class is full and the instructor will still allow you to register for the class, students must complete the TC Cross Registration Special Permission form located on the SIPA Registration website. The Course Restriction Override Form should be submitted to the TC Registrar once the Instructor signs the form. Students may be able to register for certain courses using the on-line system, but this does not guarantee a seat in the class.
SIPA and TC use separate registration systems, please confirm that you are on the class roster at SIPA and at TC. Teacher’s College will charge additional fees for any part-time SIPA students or SIPA students registered for more than 19 credits per semester. For class schedules, go to http://www.tc.columbia.edu/tc-schedule/schdsearch.cgi. Room assignments will be posted on the Bulletin Board in the first floor of Main Hall and in front of the Registrar’s Office, 150 Horace Mann.
Public Health
Instructor Approval is required for all Public Health courses. For class schedules, go to http://www.mailmanschool.org/courses/index.asp. Students should get the instructor signature on a Registration Add/Drop form and submit it to the SIPA Registration Help Site to be cross-registered for any Public Health course.
Social Work
Approval is required from the Office of Student Services located in the Social Work Building, room 525, 1255 Amsterdam Avenue (at 121st Street), (212) 851-2364. Please see Ms. Karma Lowe. Instructor or departmental approval on a Registration Add/Drop form is required. Students must register in-person at the Registration Help Site.
