James Simpson has been the chairman of the Department of Geologic Science, Columbia University for 13 years (1986–89).
He has written extensively on the geochemistry of natural waters. Much of his research has been on the Hudson River, but he has also explored the subject in a number of countries, including Australia, Egypt, Italy, Malaysia, and Pakistan. His publications include "Forecasting Annual Discharge of River Murray, Australia From a Geophysical Model of ENSO," which he coauthored with MA Cane, SK Lin, SE Zebiak, and AL Herczeg in Journal of Climate (1993); "Transport of Soluble Salts in a Large Semiarid Basin: River Murray, Australia," which he coauthored with AL Herczeg and E Mazor in Journal of Hydrology (1993); "Sediment-Derived Chronologies of Persistent Contaminants in Jamaica Bay, NY," which he coauthored with RF Bopp, SN Chillrud, and DW Robinson in Estuaries (1993); among others.
Professor Simpson holds a BS from California Institute of Technology (1965). He earned his PhD from Columbia University and completed an NOAA postdoctorate work at the Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii (1970–71). He was a visiting professor at Oregon State University (1977–78) and a NATO visiting professor at the Institute of Marine Geology, CNR, Bologna, Italy (1985). He has been a senior Fulbright research scholar twice: at Cairo University, Egypt (1984–85) and at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Perth and Adelaide, Australia (1995–96).
