Biography:
Daniel Esser is Clinical Assistant Professor of International Health and Public Affairs at Columbia University. A former staff member of the United Nations, first in Bangkok and then at UNDP global headquarters, Dr. Esser has also worked as a consultant to the International Labour Office in Geneva, CARE International in Afghanistan, and on a Sierra Leone country study for the OECD. In 2003-04, Dr. Esser was a SPURS Research Fellow at MIT, sponsored by the German National Academic Foundation. His research focuses on state fragility and urban governance in fragile settings, structural and agency-driven perspectives on 'peacebuilding' and post-war reconstruction, the politics of global health policies, and behaviour and ethics in international organizations. Dr. Esser is currently teaching courses on International Health and Development, Urbanization and Development, Research Methods, and Program Evaluation. He holds post-graduate degrees in Development Studies and Development Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
