Biography:
Christopher Kirkey is the director of the Center for the Study of Canada at Plattsburgh State University of New York. Dr. Kirkey holds a concurrent appointment as full professor in the Department of Political Science at Plattsburgh and serves as an adjunct associate professor in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University.
Chris has held several professional and academic appointments throughout his career, including serving with Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade as Canadian Mine Action scholar-in-residence (1999–2002); executive director of CONNECT (2003–present); president of the Middle Atlantic and New England Council on Canadian Studies (2000–2002); member of the board of directors, Eastern Townships Research Center, Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec (2002–present); councilor, Association of Canadian Studies in the United States (2003–2007); assistant editor, the American Review of Canadian Studies (1997–2003); and associate professor of Canadian studies and political science at Bridgewater State College, Massachusetts (1993–2002).
A keen observer and scholar of the Canada-United States political relationship, Dr. Kirkey has authored a wide variety of journal articles in International Journal of Canadian Studies, Journal of Canadian Studies, American Review of Canadian Studies. He has also written book chapters, conference papers, and commissioned reports. He is currently working on a book, The Global Elimination of Landmines: The Origins, Negotiation & Implementation of the Ottawa Convention, for Indiana University Press.
Dr. Kirkey received a BA with Honors from Queen's University in 1985, an MA in political studies from Queen's University in 1986, and a PhD in politics from Brandeis University in 1993. Chris grew up in Cornwall, Ontario and is married to Donna (née McCartney). They have three children: Mackenzie, Cameron, and Caroline.
