PEPM Curriculum

The PEPM curriculum aims to build students' technical competence in the tools of economic management and policymaking, train students in the application of these skills, and educate students about current thinking on the world economic environment, as well as its history and institutions.

The program begins with an intensive summer session in which students are taught basic skills that are an essential building block for the remainder of the course of study. At the heart of the academic year curriculum is a set of three two-semester courses on the principles of macroeconomic policy, microeconomic policy and management. In addition, students take a course on econometrics for policy managers. Complementing this skills-oriented core sequence of the curriculum are courses designed to broaden and deepen students' understanding of development economics, the political context of development and the world economic environment.

In addition, PEPM students may choose to pursue a Focus in International Energy Management and Policy (IEMP). Through IEMP students obtain a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the energy and related marine transportation fields, including the structure and operation of international energy systems, as well as the business organizations, markets and governance structures involved in producing, transporting and marketing energy products.

Transfer of Credit Policy:

PEPM Students who have previously completed a graduate degree in economics or a related discipline may apply to transfer up to nine credits from their previous graduate degree toward the PEPM MPA degree. Students who wish to apply for such transfer should contact the PEPM Office prior to orientation or as early as possible in the fall semester. Criteria for determining whether credits may be transferred will include: whether the course(s) in question was part of a completed graduate degree, the degree to which the course(s) in question relates to the PEPM course(s) for which a transfer is requested, and the student's performance in the course(s) elected to be transferred.

Please refer to the SIPA Academic Policies webpage for other policies governing student academic performance, academic honesty and successful completion of the MPA degree at SIPA.
