Curriculum
Our students' career goals vary. Public, nonprofit, private, or all three: that's the new world of public affairs. And our students are amazingly diverse, hailing from 71 countries around the world. But despite this diversity in goals and backgrounds, all our graduates share two bonds: a passion for public service, and an education that lets them convert raw passion into effective practice. The MPA curriculum is designed to give them the analytical and managerial skills they will need to excel.
The MPA curriculum has four components: the core (25 points); a concentration (at least 15 points); electives; and a summer internship (3 points). A total of 54 points and four semesters of full-time registration are required to receive the MPA degree.
Core courses serve as the foundation for study in a concentration and in elective courses. Therefore, the core is normally completed in the first year (with the exception of the Workshop U9000). Core course completion also includes the Financial Analysis requirement. Students may choose from among three courses to fulfill this part of their degree. Courses for the concentration and for electives may be taken at SIPA but also in other schools and divisions of the University. Within this broad framework, students tailor a course of study with an academic adviser to serve their needs and interests. Please note: Full-time students must be registered for at least 12 points each semester.
