This year the guest speaker is Professor Kenneth Prewitt, Columbia University's Vice President for Global Centers and well as the Carnegie Professor of Public Affairs at SIPA. He will speak on this OECD-led world-wide project, which involves more than 100 countries. The Global Project is dedicated to what is often called "Beyond GDP," an effort to help countries assess their progress as societies in ways broader than the current reliance on gross domestic product as the central measure of "how well are we doing." GDP, however important it is, cannot adequately capture such other key dimensions of social progress as sustainable development or subjective well-being -- that is, the richest countries are not necessarily the countries whose economies are kind to nature or where its citizens are particularly happy with life.
