SIPA MIA or MPA/Hertie School of Governance MPP Dual Degree Program
Back to International Dual Degree Programs

Columbia University’s SIPA offers the opportunity to study in Berlin at the Hertie School of Governance and earn degrees from both SIPA and the Hertie School in the same amount of time it takes to earn one degree. Both MIA and MPA first year SIPA students may apply for the dual degree program for study in their second year. Upon completion of their program, they will obtain a Masters of Public Policy (MPP) degree from the Hertie School, as well as a Masters Degree from SIPA.
The language of instruction is English.
Students pay the tuition and fees at the school where they are in residence.
The Second Year concentrations at Hertie:
I European and Global Governance
II Economics, Welfare and Public Goods
III Public Management
IV Democratic Development and Governance
Admission Process
Students have two options to apply: they may either apply directly into the dual degree program (start in NYC, end in Berlin), or apply in their first year at either institution.
Direct Admissions/Fixed track: If you are a new student and have not already begun studies at SIPA, you may apply to the SIPA MIA or MPA/ Hertie School MPP Dual Degree program directly through the SIPA general admissions website (Jan. 5 deadline). SIPA and Hertie will convene to make joint-decisions by April. All admitted students will begin in New York and finish in Berlin and be awarded either the MIA or MPA from SIPA and the MPP from the the Hertie School.
Flexible-track Admissions (for Continuing Students): To be eligible, students must have been accepted to either SIPA or the Hertie School. They will have the option to apply in the spring semester of their first year to complete the dual degree at the other institution in their second year. (Spring term, Feb. 1 deadline)

Applicants for the dual degree program must provide a statement of their professional goals and how they relate to the dual degree. Candidates should demonstrate strong academic performance at their first institution, and have successfully completed their first year of study, before enrolling at the partner institution. This highly competitive program is generously supported by the Blocker Fellowship, which covers substantial costs for qualified students.
Note: All students participating in this program must complete at least 30 credits while in residence at SIPA.
Tuition, Fees and Financial Aid
Students pay the tuition and fees at the school where they are in residence (e.g., if you attending Hertie, you will pay Hertie tuition and fees, and similarly at SIPA). Students who begin at Hertie will be enrolled in Columbia University health insurance or have comparable insurance coverage when they are at Columbia during their second year. 2012-13 tuition and fees are below:
Hertie MPP: € 13,830 tuition
