Regional Specializations
For the regional specialization in African Studies, students must take a total of six courses (18 points). At least three courses must be taken from African anthropology, history or political science (9 points). Three additional courses must be taken from listed offerings in the various disciplines, excluding language courses (9 points).

Russia and the Former Soviet States
Courses: A total of six courses (18 points), representing at least three different disciplines, is required for the regional specialization. Course work must include at least two courses in the social sciences (6 points); four additional courses from limited offerings in the various disciplines, excluding language courses (12 points).
Please note: Of the required 18 points, two courses (6 points) must be seminars or colloquia.
Language Requirement: Students doing a Harriman Institute specialization must also fulfill the SIPA language requirement.

Courses: MIA degree candidates with a regional specialization in Latin American Studies must complete at least 18 points of credit in courses focused exclusively on Latin America offered by SIPA and other graduate schools and departments of the University in such fields as anthropology, art history, economics, education, geography, history, literature, political science, and urban planning. Students must select courses from four different departments or schools. In addition, they must take at least one course in advanced language or literature.
Language Requirement: Students must also demonstrate proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese. This entails an examination (reading, writing, and speaking) in one language. The Spanish examination is administered by SIPA; students should contact the Department of Spanish and Portuguese regarding the Portuguese examination.

Courses: MIA Degree students with a regional specialization in Southern Asia must complete 18 points of "E" credit from the courses listed below. At least one course must be a colloquium or seminar. The 18 points of course work are distributed as follows:
History (3 points); Political Science (3 points); 12 additional points from non-language courses (for more information follow the link below).
Language Requirement: Each candidate must demonstrate knowledge of a modern South Asian language sufficient for use in research in a chosen discipline. This requirement is normally fulfilled by completing a two-year course sequence in the language with a grade of B or better. Students who already have such competence may be excused from the requirement by examination, but they are urged to continue more advanced language preparation. At present, the South Asian languages offered by the Southern Asian Institute include Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Tibetan and Punjabi.
