Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies

The institutional affiliate for ISP is the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies (SIWPS), founded by Dwight D. Eisenhower when he served as president of Columbia, named in 2003 in honor of Ambassador Arnold A. Saltzman, and located on the 13th floor of the International Affairs Building. This is the center for faculty in security studies. SIWPS has also been home to the first two holders of the Davis Chair in the Practice of Diplomacy, Jack Matlock (the last U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union), and Warren Zimmerman (Ambassador to Yugoslavia); as well as Professor Kenneth N. Waltz, formerly of the Berkeley Political Science Department, and author of seminal works in international relations theory; Dr. Stephanie G. Neuman, director of the Comparative Defense Studies Program, SIWPS research associate, and specialist on conventional arms trade and Third World security questions (and who also teaches a course for ISP); Dr. Aldo Civico, director of the International Conflict Resolution Program; and occasional visiting scholars. SIWPS occasionally sponsors seminars and guest speakers. ISP concentrators are eligible, along with graduate students in Political Science and other departments, to be Graduate Student Associates of the Institute.
