IEP 2005 Internship Survey Results

The IEP Summer Internship survey results are in! Based on surveys returned by more than half of the students, we learned that IEPers were all over the world working in all different kinds of organizations. Below is a summary of what they did last summer.

Internship types

  • 75% of students worked in the public sector, 1/3 of which were in
    projects affiliated with the UN
  • 42% of the internships were paid
  • List of organizations
    • United Nation- various divisions
    • Aga Khan Development Center
    • Czech Banking Association
    • Import-Export Bank of the United States
    • Federal Reserve Bank of NY
    • Morgan Stanley
    • OECD

Internship locations

  • 50% of students spent the summer in the US
  • 66% did their internship outside their home country
  • 33% had never been to the country they worked in before
  • IEP students went all over the world
    • USA
    • Asia
    • Latin America
    • Central Europe
    • Western Europe

Getting the internship

  • 66% obtained the internship via off-campus or personal networking
  • 66% found the internship after the end of February

The internship experience

  • 75% felt that they made a significant contribution to the organization
  • 90% rated the internship as excellent or good
  • Everyone reported that they gained insight into an new industry/organization, and most said that they were able to make new contacts or network
  • Only half reported learning new skills on the job
  • About 50% of students are not interested in returning to the organization. The rest have the opportunity return, but have not made final decisions yet

Advice to first year students

  • Network, network, network!!!
  • Start the internship search process as early as you can
  • Don't depend on OCS to find you a job. Of all our respondents, only one student obtained an internship through OCS
