Congressman Charles B. Rangel, Spring 2007 Distinguished Speaker in International Economic Policy
Congressman Rangel's speech to SIPA addressed "Congressional Priorities in a New Political Era". He was joined by Harold McGraw III, Chairman, President and CEO of The McGraw Hill Companies, and University Professor Jagdish Bhagwati. Professor Merit Janow--Director of the IEP concentration--moderated the event, which was organized by the IEP Speaker Series Committee. ![]()

A number of first and second year students came to hear a panel of 2nd-year IEP students share their opinions on a number of classes they've taken at SIPA and beyond.

A group of IEPers met for a night of drinks and live music at Prohibition, on Columbus Avenue.

Pascal Lamy, Gabriel Silver Memorial Lecture
IEP students assisted the distinguished lecture series event, which featured the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Dr. Lamy called for bilateral and regional trading arrangements that complement, rather than inhibit, the growth of a multilateral trading system.

IEP Midterm Coffee Hour
Students took a short break from midterm studying to share some coffee and munchkins.

IEP Welcome Lunch
Professor Merit Janow, Director of the IEP concentration, joined nearly thirty students for an informal luncheon at SIPA.

IEP Summer Internship Panels
Second-year IEP students discussed their experiences working with theUN, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Citigroup and the OECD, among other organizations. Twosummer internship panels were held for first-year students.

IEP/OCS Concentration Hour
A representative from the SIPA Office of Career Services (OCS) and an IEP Program Assistant fielded career-related questions specific to the concentration. Students also reviewed OCS job resources and fact sheets.
September 8 and 9
IEP Retreat
About 50 IEP students trekked upstate for a weekend in the woods at Camp McAlister, in Huguenot, New York. The event offered students a great opportunity to meet one another and get involved in the concentration. Students relaxed, swam, and enjoyed sports and icebreakers during the day. In the evening, everyone took part in “Economics Charades” – an IEP tradition – and then joined in the bonfire revelry.

Dozens of prospective first-year IEP students dined with second-year students at two local restaurants to learn more about the concentration.

Professors Bhagwati, Solow and Krugman talked about the challenges and opportunities linked to globalization. An audience of more than four hundred people gathered at Low Library to listen to their insight and opinions.

Speaker event: “WTO at 10” Conference
World experts on the World Trade Organization gathered at Columbia University to celebrate the organization’s tenth anniversary. During the two-day conference they discussed the progress made since the Uruguay Round and the future challenges for the WTO.

SIPA students visited OCS’ stand to examine IEP-related career resources and get insights from OCS staff and the IEP PAs.

IEP Townhall
Approximately 25 IEPers came together to discuss the state of the concentration. Committee chairs started the meeting with a review of their previous semester’s activities and the goals for this semester. Thereafter the floor was opened to general discussion; topics included alumni relations, career opportunities and fostering a concentration identity.

Policy Forum: "Economic Reform and the Liberalization Drive in Korea,"
Hyun Chong Kim, Minister of Trade, Republic of Korea.
IAB
Minister Kim, a Columbia graduate, talked to a group of 70 students and faculty members about Korea's trade policy and reform effort. He touched upon various trade issues, including beef imports and screen quotas. During the Q&A, there was a particular interest in economic reform taking place in Korea.

IEP, EPD, and IFP Orientation Panel
In this Orientation Week lunchtime event, the program assistants for each of the IEP, IFP and EPD concentrations fielded questions from a group of approximately 50 new students. They spoke primarily about the differences and similarities between the concentrations.
