First year students got together to hear second years talk about their different tracks within the IEP curriculum.

Professors Bhagwati, Solow and Krugman talked about the challenges and opportunities linked to globalization. An audience of more than four hundred people gathered at Low Library to listen to their insight and opinions.

Speaker event: “WTO at 10” Conference
World experts on the World Trade Organization gathered at Columbia University to celebrate the organization’s tenth anniversary. During the two-day conference they discussed the progress made since the Uruguay Round and the future challenges for the WTO.

IEP held its first ever joint social with IFP in the Amsterdam Café cellar, just round the corner from SIPA.

Ten students came together to share lunch with Professor Bubula who takes SIPA’s core year long Economics for International Affairs course.

In an effort to build up networks with alumni, the inaugural alumni dinner took place. Alum dinners enable IEP students to freely meet with alumni and share information among fellow students with similar interests.

OCS IEP Concentration Hour
SIPA students visited OCS’ stand to examine IEP-related career resources and get insights from OCS staff and the IEP PAs.

IEP Townhall
Approximately 25 IEPers came together to discuss the state of the concentration. Committee chairs started the meeting with a review of their previous semester’s activities and the goals for this semester. Thereafter the floor was opened to general discussion; topics included alumni relations, career opportunities and fostering a concentration identity.

Ten students came together to share lunch with Professor Janow, IEP Program Director. Conversation focused on the WTO, international trade and the upcoming Hong Kong Ministerial meeting.

A small group of IEPers dined with Professor Pinto who is taking this semester's IEP core course Theory of International Political Economy. Conversation revolved around current affairs, career paths and Professor Pinto's background.

In a new initiative this year, the Office of Career Services (OCS) organized an IEP concentration hour. SIPA students took advantage of the opportunity to peruse IEP-related career resources and get insights from OCS staff and IEP PAs.

A packed room of IEPers, enticed by free pizza, came to listen to 2nd years talk about their summer internship experiences at the US Treasury, Merrill Lynch, the World Bank and OECD.

Policy Forum: "Economic Reform and the Liberalization Drive in Korea,"
Hyun Chong Kim, Minister of Trade, Republic of Korea.
IAB
Minister Kim, a Columbia graduate, talked to a group of 70 students and faculty members about Korea's trade policy and reform effort. He touched upon various trade issues, including beef imports and screen quotas. During the Q&A, there was a particular interest in economic reform taking place in Korea.

IEP, EPD, and IFP Orientation Panel
In this Orientation Week lunchtime event, the program assistants for each of the IEP, IFP and EPD concentrations fielded questions from a group of approximately 50 new students. They spoke primarily about the differences and similarities between the concentrations.
