The international human rights field is comprised of a broad spectrum of organizations which focus on the international protection and promotion of human rights as formulated in human rights covenants, treaties, and declarations. These governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations incorporate the international standards in social, political, legal, and cultural institutions.

Functional categories within the human rights career path include public policy formation, advocacy, legal aid and assistance, public interest law, monitoring, research and documentation, program coordination and management, education and promotion, economic and political development, as well as fundraising.

In addition to interdisciplinary skills, policy and research training, the Program assists students in obtaining internships and careers, organizes speaker series, specialist panels and applied workshops, works closely with Columbia's other faculties, centers and programs engaged in human rights work, and has links with a wide range of human rights organizations both domestically and internationally.
