Social and Extra-Curricular Activities

The Human Rights community and network is what leads many students to choose HR as their concentration. Some of the many programs that we run are concentration social gatherings, film screenings, HR townhall meeting, panel discussions, and events with the many Human Rights groups in schools across Columbia University.

The Human Rights Program also posts upcoming events and activities from on-campus and off-campus groups and organizations working on human rights issues. Specifically, the student-led organization, the Human Rights Working Group, is a great way to get involved with social and extra-curricular activities focused on human rights while at SIPA.

One of the most notable events is the annual retreat. The 2010 retreat took place September 25th-26th and the Ashokan Retreat Center in the Catskills. This another example of a great way for the first and second year students to come together to discuss Human Rights, what they hope to obtain through their studies, and continue to solidify the relationships that will serve them as professionals for years after graduation.

Additionally, we work in partnership with the Institute for the Study of Human Rights, holding panels with the Human Rights advocates, and working together to further enhance our academic Human Rights studies.

Each year the Human Rights Concentration has two second year students who serve as the Department Research Assistants (DRA's), leading and coordinating the programming for the academic year. Aside from holding weekly office hours, they are available at anytime to speak to both prospective and current students on all aspects of the Human Rights Concentrations.

The 2011-2012 DRA’s are Lindsey Reichlin lsr2133@columbia.edu and Kelly McCracken kem2166@columbia.edu.
