Required Courses
All students must complete at least four of the courses that make up the EPS core. The other core courses may also be taken as electives if desired:
1) Environmental Science for Decision Makers (U4735) -We strongly recommend that this be taken in the first semester. Although the associated 1- point recitation is not required, students are encouraged to enroll in it.
At least one course from the Environmental Economics cluster and the Environmental Policy cluster respectively.
2) Environmental Policy Cluster
- Environmental Politics and Policy Management (U6241)
- International Relations of the Environment (U6243)
- Political Context of Public and Private Management (ENVP U6320)
3) Environmental Economics Cluster
- Environmental Finance(U6022)
- Economics of Sustainable Development (W4329 or ENVP U6230)
- Economics of the Environment (W4625)
4) EPS Capstone Workshop (U8905)
A workshop offered by another concentration may be substituted provided that its topic contains a significant environmental element, as determined by the EPS Director. Also, with prior permission of the EPS Director, a mini thesis may also be substituted for the workshop.
Meeting SIPA Core Requirements with EPS Courses
A course may simultaneously fulfill a MIA requirement and an EPS concentration requirement. This is known as 'double-counting'. By double counting, students can free-up more course slots for desired electives while continuing to fulfill all the requirements for the MIA degree. Please note however, that while a course may double-count toward two requirements it still counts as only one course with regard to credit hours.
Internships
All SIPA students are required to fulfill a minimum of 3 credits in an internship. Internships may be performed both during the academic year and in the summer between the first and second years.
Internships provide an opportunity not only to test your value in the job market, but they are also an excellent way to explore and better define areas of professional interest. Students should investigate internship possibilities through the Office of Career Services (OCS) as soon as possible, and may also wish to consult the EPS alumni list, EPS faculty, and the Program Assistants for further suggestions. Students should also feel free to use any prior contacts they may have as well. It is important to be aware that in the past, many EPS students have found the contacts made through internships extremely helpful in the job search.
Environmental Electives
EPS students must take at least two electives in addition to the four courses required for the EPS core, and most EPS students choose to take many more than two electives. See the list of courses. Please note that many of the courses are offered outside of SIPA. Additional information can be found at:
