Common Goods in a Divided World - Challenges and Opportunities for International Cooperation in Fragile States
When: Tuesday, April 17, 2012
Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm
Where: Room 1401, International Affairs Building
Fragile states are a serious international problem, creating regional instability, armies of refugees, and havens for terrorists and criminals. Despite a decade of trying, the West has been unable to make substantial progress helping them. Rising powers such as China offer a new approach--based on pragmatic, technologically appropriate, non-judgemental cooperation. What can we learn and how can we cooperate with these countries to help some of the world's poorest states?
Seth Kaplan is a writer and policy consultant focusing on fragile states, governance, and development. He is the author of Fixing Fragile States: A New Paradigm for Development and a forthcoming book on poverty and state governance. A Wharton MBA and Palmer scholar, Seth has worked for several large multinationals and founded four companies. He edits the website http://www.fragilestates.org/
