Workshop in Development Practice – Final Presentations

When: April 29 and 30, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
Where: IAB, Room 1512

The student teams in SIPA’s Workshop in Development Practice have been working this year with clients in over twenty countries on innovative projects involving the intersection of international development with human rights, corporate social responsibility, humanitarian affairs, media, international trade, entrepreneurship and private sector development. The teams will be presenting their findings and recommendations in a conference at SIPA on April 29 and 30.

The Workshop in Development Practice is co-sponsored by the Economic and Political Development, Human Rights, and International Finance and Economic Policy Concentrations, the International Media, Advocacy and Communications Specialization, and the Humanitarian Affairs and UN Studies Programs. This year’s Workshop clients include Acumen Fund (India), Bihar Rural Livelihood Promotion Society (India), Catholic Relief Services (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Endeavor (Chile), Family Health International (Ethiopia), Initiative for Policy Dialogue (Ghana, Nigeria & Uganda) Institute for Research and Debate on Governance (Cameroon), Instituto Palmas (Brazil), International Trade Centre (Peru & Sri Lanka), Jitegemee (Kenya), Millennium Challenge Corporation (Ghana & Morocco), Millennium Cities Initiative (Nigeria), PepsiCo South American Foods (Venezuela), UN Iraq Information & Analysis Unit (Jordan),UN Peacebuilding Fund (Comoros), UNDP (NYC), UNICEF (Malawi), University of São Paulo working with Alcoa Brazil (Brazil), Women’s Political Resource Center (Georgia), and Women’s Refugee Commission (Liberia).

Information and Communication Technology and the Millennium Development Goals Speaker Series, MDG - 3 Gender Equality

When: April 20, 2010 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm EDT
Where: IAB, Room 1512

The Economic and Political Development Concentration will be having our final event in our speaker series on Information and Communication Technologies and the Millennium Development Goals. This event will focus on the MDG 3 - promote gender equality and empower women. Speakers include: Analia Lavin, Association of Progressive Communications (APC), Eugenia McGill, Columbia University, Brooke Partridge, Vital Wave Consulting, and Christelle Scharff, Pace University. EPD Social Entrepreneurship Lecture Series, “Building Partnerships for Social Ventures,” with Yasmina Zaidman, Director of Communications, Acumen Fund.

When: Tuesday, April 6, 6:00-8:00pm
Where: IAB, Room 1512

Yasmina Zaidman is the Director of Communications at Acumen Fund, a global non-profit venture fund that invests in businesses that serve the poor. She works to share insights from Acumen’s work and build an engaged community that can change how the world tackles poverty. Previously at Acumen Fund she launched the Water Portfolio, where she invested $3 million in water enterprises in India and East Africa. Ms. Zaidman has worked in the arenas of international development, corporate sustainability and social entrepreneurship for fifteen years. She led the Environmental Innovations Initiative at Ashoka where, as Acting Director, she worked to capture and disseminate the best practices of leading environmental innovators. She has organized conferences on business and the environment and worked as an environmental consultant at Geomatrix, where she implemented environmental management systems for Fortune 100 companies. She received a BA from Vassar College and her MBA from Stanford University

Staff Attorney of the Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center

When: Monday, April 5, 1:00-2:00 p.m.
Where: IAB, Room 1401

Ms. Baskin, Staff Attorney of the Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center, will discuss the concerns of immigrant sex workers and the impacts of United States policies on trafficking and sex work around the world. The Sex Workers Project provides direct legal and social services and training, and engages in documentation and policy advocacy, for sex workers. SWP is housed at the Urban Justice Center, which serves low-income, marginalized New Yorkers through direct legal services, systemic advocacy, community education, and organizing. Please join the EPD concentration as we kick off our speaker series on ITCs and the Millennium Development Goals.

Patricia Mechael will discuss the role of ICTs and the Millennium Development Goals. The focus of this introductory talk will be on mHealth in developing countries—MDGs 4, 5 & 6. The panel will also include Jo Puri from the Millennium Villages Project who will provide the overview on ICTs and the MDGs and Matt Berg who will present his work on Under 5 Child Monitoring through SMS in Kenya as well his current work on Malaria in Uganda.
