Spring 2006 | Fall 2005 | Spring 2005 | Spring 2004
Internships are an important part of the MIA curriculum and a great way of getting exposed to work in international development. While the EPD Program does not provide students with internships (with the exception of the UNDP-SURF internship program - see below), we nevertheless have a number of resources to offer that will help you in finding an internship:
-
Internship offers that the EPD office receives from alumni, friends of EPD, and other sources will be forwarded to all EPD students
-
The EPD internship committee (set-up and run by EPD students) regularly organizes brown bags and other events to inform students about potential internships and bring them together with potential employees
-
The 2000 EPD internship committee has compiled a list of questions that can help you to make decisions about a potential internship
-
Lastly, the vast experience of the EPD student body is the best resource that the EPD program can offer you in finding an internship. Make sure you talk to second year students about their experience and ask for contacts!
For more information about past and potential internship positions, requirements etc., please refer to the Office of Career Services (OCS) homepage
The UNDP-SURF Internship Program:
In 2002, EPD in collaboration with the SIPA Dean's office, OCS, and UNDP launched a pilot internship program - the UNDP-SURF internship program. This custom designed internship program will be mutually beneficial to UNDP and to rising young development professionals at SIPA. The SURF internship program will draw upon Masters level students concentrating on Development Studies and/or Human Rights at SIPA. These students will be on assignment to assist UNDP staff with UNDP's Global Cooperation Framework.
In the Global Cooperation Framework, UNDP provides a range of services to governments and UN country teams in priority areas called the Strategic Results Framework. These priority areas are democratic governance, poverty reduction, crisis prevention and recovery, environment and sustainable energy, HIV-AIDS and Information and Communication Technology. Having thus focused its work, UNDP is also operationalizing this focus through a network of Sub-Regional Resource Facilities (SURFs). The objective of this program is to position the six interns form SIPA to assist with this multifaceted effort. SURF-UNDP interns will work in the Bureau of Development Policy/UNDP in NYC in the spring semester, and then will take up a summer internship working in one of the new Sub-Regional Resource Facilities that are operationalizing the Strategic Results Framework.
Careers In International Development
EPD graduates go on to become administrators, managers, advisors and analysts with non-governmental organizations, multilateral institutions, consulting firms, development banks, and governments. Most start immediately upon their graduation from SIPA. Others choose to enhance their skills further by pursuing a second professional degree in a related field such as public health, planning, business or education, or by obtaining a Ph.D. in political science, anthropology, economics or sociology.
The Office of Career Services has put together a career guide for EPD students that provides information on leading organizations and job opportunities within the various sub-fields of development. We encourage you to use this guide as the basis for your internship and job search.
