Workshop in Development Practice – Final Presentations

The student teams in SIPA’s Workshop in Development Practice, who have been working with clients in over twenty countries on innovative projects involving the intersection of international development with human rights, corporate social responsibility, humanitarian affairs, sustainability, entrepreneurship and media, will be presenting their final reports and recommendations in a conference at SIPA on April 30 and May 1.
The Workshop in Development Practice is co-sponsored by the Economic and Political Development, Human Rights and International Media and Communications Concentrations and the Humanitarian Affairs Program. This year’s Workshop clients include Ashoka Arab World, COMFAMA, Endeavor, Government of Mauritius, Grameen America, Instituto Observatorio Social, Institute for Research and Debate on Governance, International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, International Trade Centre, Millennium Cities Initiative, Millennium Villages Project, Revenue Watch Institute, Royal Dutch Shell, SNV Uganda, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, WaterAid and Women’s Refugee Commission.

Workshop: Transcultural Diversity Issues in the Workplace

Diversity consultant Tanya M. Odom will conduct a workshop on cross-cultural issues (including gender and LGBT issues) in the workplace geared towards first-year students working abroad and international students working in the United States. The workshop will be interactive and inclusive, and will build on students' existing knowledge and skills.
This event is co-sponsored by the Office of Career Services, Conflict Resolution Working Group, Economic and Political Development Concentration, Gender Policy Working Group, Human Rights Concentration, Humanitarian Affairs Program, International Economic Policy Concentration, International Finance and Policy Concentration, and QUIPASA.

SIPA Alum Dan Whitaker will speak about his extensive work as an adviser to national governments and international organizations on health sector reform in developing countries. Two big themes discussed will be
- what could be described as changing aid architecture, with the rise of single disease organizations and new ways of delivering aid
- the intersection of politics and health care within developing countries
The Financial Crisis Six Months Later—Impacts on Developing Countries

What impact will the global economic downturn have on the world's poor? How will developing countries be affected by the current financial crisis? Will large numbers of individuals be pushed back into poverty? What are the likely gender impacts of the crisis? Join a panel of speakers from the academic and policy world to hear their informed perspectives on these critical questions.
Panelists will include:
- Jose Antonio Ocampo, Director of the Economic and Political Development Concentration at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs
- Sanjay Reddy, Assistant Professor of Economics at Barnard College, Columbia University
- Stephanie Seguino, Professor of Economics at the University of Vermont
- Robert Vos, Director, Development Policy and Analysis Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations.
