EPD Curriculum Requirements

MIA and MPA students must fulfill two sets of curriculum requirements: those of the general degrees as well as a concentration's specific requirements. Some courses can double count for both sets of requirements. However, no course can double count toward two EPD requirements. For MIA and MPA requirements see the SIPA Bulletin or inquire at the Dean's office. MPA students who conentrate in EPD must fulfill the same language requirements as MIA students.

The EPD curriculum requires a total of 24 points of graduate coursework consisting of 8 3-point courses (sometimes a combination of one and two-point courses as well). There are three elements to the EPD curriculum:

  1. EPD core (Three 3-point courses = 9 points)
    1. U6253Introduction to International Development (3 points) or
U8457State and Society in the Developing World (3 points) or
U6465Political Development in the Third World (3 point
    2. U6602Economic Development for International Affairs (3 points) or
U8145Advanced Economic Development for International Affairs (3 points)
    3. Advanced Topics in Development – an 8000 level Seminar course related to your professional focus, regional interest or development more broadly.  Must be an 8000 level course (3 points).
  2. EPD Professional Focus Requirement (Three 3-point courses = 9 points)

EPD students are required to choose three 3-point courses from the following substantive areas.  This allows EPD students to tailor their concentration to their specific interests and needs.  Students who wish to define their own area of focus must submit a proposal to the director for approval.

(View sample courses for each professional focus by clicking on the links above.)

**  The EPD curriculum requires a total of 24 points of graduate coursework consisting of 8 3-point courses (sometimes a combination of one and two-point courses as well).  These must be fulfilled in addition to the general MIA/MPA degree requirements.  MPA students who concentrate in EPD must fulfill the same language requirements as MIA students.
