Dennis Lien
First Year EE-IEMP, Applied Science
“As a new and incoming first year student and a former analytical biochemist, I was amazed to see the interconnection of science with policy and the importance that science has in policy making. I was thrilled to know that the wealth of science and engineering resources at Columbia were at my disposal as a SIPA student. Directly at SIPA, I have had to apply scientific methodology to analyze policy issues in various case studies and group activities of the courses that I am taking. The interplay of
mathematics, science and policy are all more interwoven than I originally thought, and the program has so far challenged me to think more critically as both a budding policy maker and as a traditional scientist.”
Kine Elisabeth Martinussen
First Year EE-IEMP, Applied Science
“I spent my undergraduate years pursuing my two passions, social sciences and ecology. The applied sciences specialization allows me to unify and synthesize these interests through environmental policy. Today I work towards becoming a policy-maker with my feet solidly planted on scientific ground. Working with graduate students and professors at other scientific departments opens new ways to think about policy, and helps me develop the scientific language I need to meet challenges in the future.”
