Regional Institutes
Through its network of seven multidiscplinary Regional Institutes at SIPA, Columbia has one of the world’s most comprehensive area studies programs. The Institutes are: the Harriman Institute (covering the former Soviet Union, East Central Europe, and the Balkans), the Weatherhead Institute for East Asian Studies, the Southern Asia Institute, the Institute for African Studies, the Institute for Latin American Studies, the Middle East Institute, and the Institute for the Study of Europe. The activities of each Institute enrich curricular offerings through public programming such as seminars and lectures, research fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty, collaborations with other New York City institutions, student advising, and K-12 outreach.
