MEI Fellowships for Graduate Students:


MEI Dissertation Write-Up Fellowship for 2009-10

Application Deadline: April 10, 2009

Available for the academic year to doctoral students at the write-up stage of their dissertation, whose research is focused on the modern Middle East. Provides a stipend/and or matriculation and fees. Stipend amounts vary from approximately $5,000 to $12,000.

Application materials:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • statement of progress of three to four pages describing your dissertation progress
  • two letters of reference
  • academic transcript

Middle East Institute Regional Travel Research Fellowship, Summer 2009

Application Deadline April 10, 2009

Provides up to $2,500 to graduate and professional school students to support summer travel to the Middle East for the purposes of work on a sustained research project.

Separate grants will be awarded for travel and research to each of the following four regions of the Middle East:

  1. Arab countries
  2. Turkey
  3. Israel
  4. Iran
Fellowship requirements: Students must be Columbia University graduate students in good standing. The project for which they seek funding must be ongoing and sustained. Language study programs will not be funded. Fellowship recipients cannot use this fellowship as a supplement to other summer fellowships they have received. Fellowship recipients will be required to submit a brief trip report within six weeks of their return.

Application requirements: Proposal - (2 page max.) (Include any arrangements you have made with host institution)

  • Budget - include cost of airfare

  • Curriculum vitae - students should include information on academic standing- also include Social Security Number on CV

  • 1 letter of recommendation

Middle East Institute Conference Travel Grants (ongoing)

Provides reimbursement of up to $350 to doctoral candidates for costs related to presenting a paper at an academic conference. The candidate must first attempt to secure funding from GSAS and/or home department and provide an explanation as to why additional funds are being sought from the Middle East Institute.

Application procedure: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but no later than 4 weeks before the date of the conference for which the student is seeking funding. In your request, please indicate the title/organizer, location, and dates of the conference as well as the title of your paper, session you will present at, and a brief paragraph stating why you want to attend the conference. In addition, please include the following information: academic department, year, name of advisor. Funding sought: indicate total amount needed, funds provided by other sources (academic department, etc). Send request to amb49@columbia.edu.


MEI Fellowships for Undergraduate Students:

The Eric J. Posner Fellowship will fund student summer travel to the Middle East. Undergraduates who are doing research for a senior thesis project are eligible. The fellowship will cover costs up to a maximum of $3,000.

Egyptian American Community Foundation Fellowship will award stipends to undergraduate students who are working in unpaid internships in the Middle East or domestically dealing with the Middle East, preferably with a focus on Egypt. Before applying, the student must submit proof that an offer has been extended by the organization offering the internship. The fellowship will cover costs up to a maximum of $2,500.
