SIPA and the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) Exchange Program

Columbia University’s SIPA and the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) announce new English-taught course modules to be offered in next year’s Exchange Program

The Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) at the University of Tokyo plans to create a new program of policy courses taught in English starting in October 2010. SIPA students will now benefit from a considerably broader range of academic courses and be able to enroll at GraSPP as an exchange student without proficiency in Japanese. We are very happy to offer this opportunity which makes it possible for more SIPA students to study at one of the most prestigious institutions in Asia.

For a list of English-taught courses, which cover topics ranging from the Japan’s East Asia Policy to International Financial Institutions, please refer to the link here: Courses Taught in English.

The University of Tokyo (Todai) is widely considered to be the most prestigious university in Japan, and is preeminent in Asia. Its history spans over 130 years, and it is committed to promoting its global reach by strengthening relations with other top class universities and research institutions. The University of Tokyo is also currently spearheading an ambitious and innovative program to research issues relating to the global sustainability of human society, with a particular focus on Asia.

The Faculty of Law and Politics and Economics at Todai merged in 2004 to form GraSPP and to offer the Master of Public Policy. The Degree is completed in 2 years, with around 100 newly admitted students each year. It focuses on four distinct policy areas:

  • Economic Policy
  • International Public Policy
  • Legal Policy
  • Public Management

GraSPP specializes in advancing practical knowledge and skills, and belongs to a new class of Japanese professional graduate schools, emphasizing a hands-on approach. It aims to produce broad-minded public policy professionals.

During the 2009-10 academic year, students may enroll at GraSPP as an exchange student from SIPA. The period is normally for 1 full academic year, but we may consider 1 semester exchanges. After successful completion of coursework there, credits will be transferred to count towards your SIPA degree. Students will pay the regular SIPA tuition rate. The deadline for application is April 1. SIPA will forward to GraSPP a copy of the original set of application materials on file.
